There were three fish in the aquarium today and Miriam was glad. Yesterday she had worried about the smallest pink fish and had tried to tell her mother that she knew the other two were secretly mean but her mother was studying a car magazine and had needed quiet from everyone whilst she made the biggest decision of her life.-A decison that would, in time, affect them all. Miriam was not a fool. Her teachers found her independence useful and believed her mature enough to ignore.
Cars weren’t really the decision but adults had their own ways of saying things and Miriam had too much on her own mind to care.
George loved the solid way she stood in front of people and spoke in that voice that seemed buried in moss. He always leaned forward to catch at her words and the deep channels of feelings she could barely suppress. So there she ws looking at the small pink fish and thinking about escape. The jar in her pocket clung to her hand and George was now in the foyer behind her awaiting for the sign to move.
