Location: Home -> Island of Inspiration -> UCAS Coaching -> After After Tusitala's UCAS Coaching The Spanish director Almodovar noted that in any film screenplay, 'without being aware of it, I find myself telling them about tones, hidden intentions and mysterious parallelisms.' My A level studies have made me aware of the rich complexities of language and the challenging linguistic processes by which we come to understand one another. I intend to pursue a degree in English so that I can explore in far great depth, these ‘hidden’ nuances in writing which often so govern our real lives. Almodovar's point about the 'hidden intentions' of language has been illustrated in my English Course where the innate ambiguity and instability of expression has proved revelatory to me. I have independently elected to read Zadie Smith and Dickens and such narratives have expanded my understanding of both Contemporary and 'Classic' literature. As a student at A level I have enjoyed both the excitement of group debates and the intellectual freedom of pursuing my own academic interests. I have excellent initiative and respond effectively both to the exigencies of research and more prescriptive study skills. I am ambitious to gain a very good degree and wish to develop a sophisticated level of understanding in this subject. I have enrolled on several WEA Courses at Easter in order to improve my appreciation of literature, and am sure my confidence will benefit from this investment. I am also to visit Stratford at Easter and look forward to immersing myself in Measure for Measure in a very intensive way! I read voraciously and enjoy both ‘genre’ fiction as well as the more obviously literary writers. The symbolic play on the idea of 'the return' in Volver reminded me of Hamlet and the unfinished nature of the past. It is through recognising links like these that I have gained enormous pleasure in my literary studies. My favourite writer is Ian Rankin and I have read all his recent novels! Throughout my school life I have shown myself to be reliable and a compassionate leader. I have worked as a volunteer with Adults with learning Disabilities and helped organise the Annual Excursion to Blackpool for Pensioners. I have represented my school in a variety of sports including netball, lacrosse and am Captain of the Girls’ Football team at my school. I have also represented my school at county level in chess! My part time job of two years has expanded my understanding of the work ethos and I am far more confident and self-assured as a result of working so regularly with the public. | |
