James Lee Burke is an author I hold in the very highest regard for the sequence of novels involving his flawed Detective Dave Robicheaux. His novels race along at breakneck speed, full of explosive storylines and brilliant descriptions of the Southern Bayou.

His strong characterisation puts the reader right at the heart of a vortex that makes it impossible to put the book down after the first page. All his characters are vibrant and believable: killers, pimps, mafia bosses and prostitutes live all too human and often brief lives. Time is spent raising a family, running a business, caring for friends.
All this comes out of a very creative place; the mind of an author who has grabbed my attention like no other.

I am sure I will continue to enjoy his novels for a long time to come.
