Well I started the book last night and have thus been reunited with Lisbeth Salander, this time in the midst of Hurricane Matilda where she disposes of a potential wife killer with a pragmatism both instinctive and flexible! Once again we are in a world of male violence directed towards women and I presume that the book may unravel far more of Salander’s past than we learnt in book one.
I am also staring at John Connolly’s The Black Angel where the villain Brightwelll, reminds me creepily of Cormac McCarthy’s diabolical creation The Judge in Blood Meridian. In both it is the correspondence between overripe flesh and abject degeneracy which disturbs to the core. Perhaps I will finish it, but it has a peculiar energy that unsettles….
And then my favourite read of the last months and a book which demands its own review, Luca Turin’s Perfumes the Guide! This is a fascinating dissection of hundreds of perfumes for men and women reviewed by Turin and his Partner Sanchez with a spiritedness and virtuousity that compels and encourages much ebay research!
How about this as an example of their consummate style on Gucci’s Rush perfume:
‘This is large scale outdoor art. And what’s more, though it smells so new, so confident, so reckless, so of-the-moment, Rush manages at every stage to feel cozy and alive, never a cold stranger – this creature may be from outer space, but its blood is warm.’
