‘…Full of scorpions is my mind’ cries Macbeth in Act Three of Shakepeare’s play. He knows his consciousness is plagued with destructive thoughts, all extracted from a word pool none of us would like to swim in. His mental health is clearly suffering! He is swimming with dangerous creatures!
And yet sometimes perhaps we all swim in word pools made up of our own versions of these ‘scorpions’- words and phrases that resonate with negativity and private nightmare. We do allow ‘scorpions’ sway over our language so that our thoughts, outlook and even behaviour are reflections of these potentially malignant creatures.
Unsurprisingly we feel may feel limited, negative and even ‘unlucky’.
Yet, banish the ‘scorpions’ from our heads and conversation and what naturally happens?
