Eat, Pray and Love versus Diary of a Wimpy Kid: No contest!!

This weekend I had the luxury of watching two fims at the cinema in Cine World’s very comfy seats I might add! Julia Roberts’ new film has the emotional repetoire and range of Charles Bronson at his best: namely from A to B and back again. My friend rightly suggested we stay and watch some beautiful scenery. So we did. But the banality of the supposedly soul searching and the incongruity between Julia Roberts’ characters’ behaviour and our expected sympathy was too marked. She resembles a caricature of care. Me, then me then me again, all through the film. I was very glad Speice Valley was still open for a very soulful coffee!

On the other hand the trip to see Diary of a Wimpy Kid was great fun . The film was witty, astute and real. I loved the throwaway humour, the revelations of school survival and the surreal happenings of the daily in a teenage life. Cliched it was not and I respected the film’s refusal to embrace platitudes. ‘Things’ were learnt about friendship and responsibility, but that did not mean the whole world concurred. Transfomration remained local but powerful. And I will never look at a slice of cheese in quite the same was again!!
