First Word Pools in Chapel-en-le-frith and Marple by Janet Lewison

Maybe there were silent traces of space visitors all over Peru?

My dad thought so….

And maybe those Egyptian workers had more help with the pyramids than we imagined?

 Well it made me think-

Photographs taken at acute angles demanded to be explained,

My teacher asked for Easter projects and pupil led time tables

( for this was the 1960s)

So he got Von Daniken and his Chariots of the Gods-

Not a word about Neil Armstrong or the moon.

My uncle gifted me with tickets for Tutankhamum

Tutenkhamen

– the privilege of a civil service lunch break,

The strange hush of the Royal room

with the death mask of Gold-

James Bond, Odd Job

And Kerry’s party cinema double bill,

Robert Kennedy shot in the Manchester Evening News,

I know I cried..

Mum buying Look and Learn,

Her Saturday manager’s  job at C & A

War and peace on TV,

We all went to Aberyswyth and watched Pierre marry Natasha in a student kitchen

Whilst my cousin’s boyfriend played his guitar

Pen pals where stamps showed crimson hot flowers

A Quaker meeting House just over my grandma’s wall,

Ford Cortinas Mk 1 and 2,

Corona, cul-de-sacs and the eleven plus exam..

Pneumonia, Poodles-minature and Toy,

And Midge, a Jack Russell missing her mother

In the oven door
