Here’s a typical bit of Philip Larkin’s poetry,
‘Where do they go, dull days,
Where do they congregate?
Over there, down dull lane,
Drab with desire’s dull fate.’
In fact, Larkin was a notorious prankster amongst his friends, a Rabelaisian figure with a love of real ale and the hearty barmaids that served it. He would often drop in his local pub, in the guise of his notorious alter ego ‘Pop’ Larkin. Here he would down 25 pints of bitter, demand an arm wrestle with Ted Hughes, and hit him with a frozen pike, while shouting ‘It’s only a kipper, vicar!’ All went along with the act, affecting astonishment each time he pulled off his false sideburns and said ‘Ta -rah! It’s me, Philip. Give me another drink, Babs, I can feel a poem coming on…
If I don’t have a beer
I might feel a queer.’
The next morning’s hangover would produce more typical poetic fare.
