Used to sing this to my son when he was a baby. Told him today and he looked rather horrified! My Great Aunt Bessie was a great fan of Lehar and this song has an inescapable, magical sense of the past and present for me. I can listen to this and am back in 1960s Chorlton watching my Aunt play the piano and feeding one of her many rescued cats.Am also dancing around my turquoise living room with a 3 month year Old Edward wearing a green knitted pixie cardigan knitted by our next door neighbours.

Think we are all indelibly imprinted with others’ sounds, faces, smells, emotions. And remembrance can reconcile us to our infinite connectedness to so many many time spaces. And maybe this reconciliation reminds us of life’s secret threads of tendernesses that join all the seemingly disparate fragments like an underground stream?

I certainly feel that the innate loneliness of being ‘alive’ is  eschewed by a recognition of the nearness( in many senses)  of another soul.
